Tentative timeline for UK torch relay author tour

May 1st, 2012 (12:55 pm)

This is very draft and will undoubtedly change much so only take a gander if you're an author interested in filling up some of the empty slots or checking the ones you've been allocated.

Olympic torch relay

Please check your day here. The bar at the top of the article has a link to each day and will show the route. Authors have been allocated a day as they have a story set in or around that area, or a character with links there, or they live there or have some connection. Sometimes I’ve had to use best fit as the torch doesn’t go everywhere (Isle of Wight springs to mind) or we’ve had such demand for a day I’ve had to cheat (and you’ve got the day the torch travels from your area). I’ve also put some people in for more than one post in order to maximise coverage.

Geography is my weakest suit and it’ll be a miracle if I haven’t mucked up somewhere so do yell if I have.

Ransom cover

I've got a couple of stories set in Portsmouth (Walking Wounded, and some of the RN series have shore-scenes there. (July 15/16)

Righty ho. I'll give you day 59, Portsmouth to Brighton, and then move UK Meet to day 60. West country went like a shot - you haven't got any scottish or Northern Ireland connections in the stories perchance?

No, just some Scottish ancestors. Sorry!

I'll remember that if we end up stuck!

Tangled Web

I've got a story set partly in Kent - Tangled Web. If it'd be easier to use that, just let me know.

Kent is pretty well covered, so let's keep what we have. Unless you remember that Will or Davy hails from County Down...

I know there was an excellent book set in Ireland a year or three ago, but damned if I can remember the title or author. Gerry Burney?

Oh you genius girl. Yes. Off to mail him.

would it not be a good idea to have a kind of submissions call post - not everyone is on the yahoo groups, and if all the current participants were to post about it and link to this post, we'd probably fill it up very quickly.

Posted at: May 1st, 2012 01:38 pm (UTC)

Sounds like an excellent idea, especially now I have a proper post, list, etc. Feel free to repost link to this anywhere you see fit and I'll get the word around, too. (Jo Myles has said she'll pimp it, as well.)

Thing is this had grown within a couple of days from possible idea to real thing. Am trying to catch its coat tails!

A Series of Ordinary Adventures

So...

Day 37 Hebden Bridge/Halifax

Day 49 Colchester

If you need me to come up with something for Day 47 as well, my het zombie story is set around Norfolk and Suffolk, and I'm sure I can sneak some LGBT+ content in there somewhere ;-)

Do you need anything north eastish - southern Scotland, Northumbria, North Yorks? One of my WsIP is set in that area and there's some bits to do with the landscape that might be appropriate.

Yes. Day 27 OK for you? (Edinburgh to Alnwick.) Or there's 26, Alnwick to Newcastle.

Hi Charlie!

I would love to bag day 44, Birmingham please, as I'll have a fairly newly-released book by then which is set in the city!

Thanks for organising this - it's a great idea.

Hi Charlie, Josephine Myles linked me up here from Dreamspinner Press. My ebook novella Possession, out last year with DSP, features a UK-born MC. I'm currently working on a full length novel set in UK, but that's in development stages :)

Would love to participate here, just let me know!

A link to Possession for you: http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=2262&osCsid=fnjv46kvhcarcfp5cqj7fcc4p5

I can always be reached at jessicaskyedavies@gmail.com

Thanks!

Would love to participate, but clueless on geography!

I can barely get it straight in my own country ;-)

I have a story set in Victorian London; one character is originally from Northumberland, the other is from Wales (somewhere near the ocean, I never specified). Is there room for me?

The bulk of the novel takes place in Whitechaple, and but also mentioned are parts of the West End and Scadbury Park. (And if I'm misspelling place-names, I apologize, I'm getting red squiggles from my spell-check but no helpful suggestions, and I swear, it looks right :)

Thanks,
Helen

Re: Would love to participate, but clueless on geography!

London is booked but you can have Day 28, which is Newcastle (Northumberland). Does that work for you, Helen?

Day 39

Hi Charlie,

If Day 39 is still available, I'd like to stake a claim to it - born in Rotherham and still have very strong connections there, even though I now live and write not a million miles from the Olympic stadium site. And I've had a Sheffield boy or two in my m/m stories before now...

All the best,

day 46?

Hi, B. Snow here, using my lj account to comment. I could take day 46 -- looks like there are some small lakes around Peterborough that might suit the purposes of my story, and it's about the right distance from London.

BTW, the story I'm working on is a Regency, but it's also paranormal (which I really don't write, so this is gonna be fun....) -- is that acceptable for this author tour, or do you want straight (so to speak) historicals?

Re: day 46?

BTW, that torch relay site has a great list of the places it will go through on each day -- I just googlemapped your available days until I found an area that would work! :)

Anything and everything is acceptable so long as there's a link (however tenuous) to the area. Day 46 is yours, my dear. Thanks you!

Hi!

I noticed you've still got a fair amount of days free.

Is it ok for me to bag day 14 (Bolton to Liverpool) as well - my dad's family's from St Helens & I reckon I could write something if no one else wants that day ;-)

You've got it, girl. I've got fillers in mind for some of the blank days (like Owen and sassoon meeting at Craiglockhart for Edinburgh) but the more covered, the merrier.

I've done mine for tomorrow and scheduled it for 6:00 in the morning. Hoping I haven't ballsed it up at all! I know what I'm doing with WordPress mostly, but I'm sure I could find a way to mess up or break the rules!

Hi, can Andy Slayde and I have day 26 please? We have a character in a couple of our stories who was born in Edinburgh. The stories are set in the USA, but Cameron is a proud Scotsman and would love to take part. What do we have to do, exactly?

You can certainly have day 26. Have a look at the posts so far http://wecarrythetorch.wordpress.com/ and you'll get the idea of what we're looking for. I'll also need an e-mail addy so you can be given posting access?

Thanks for taking part!

I've put a 'still available list' on the UK Meet site and it just occurred to me that, if nobody else wants it I could do Day 41 Lincoln to Nottingham. I can enthuse about longbows 'til the cows come home so it would be no trouble to put a history and info post together at short notice.
